Music-industry manufacturer and label-owner Sylvia Robinson had become cognizant of the massive rap music barricade parties occurring around the New York area during the late '70s, so she gathered three local rappers (Master Gee, Wonder Mike, and Big Bank Hank) to criminal record a single. Infectious and attention-getting, "Rapper's Delight" borrowed the break in from Chic's "Honorable Times" and became a worldwide hit, eventually merchandising more than 8 zillion copies. Most industry people figured rap for a ephemeral trend, and though they were deadened wrong, the Sugarhill Gang sure as shooting didn't carry the great mullein; despite several pocket-size hits ("8th Wonder," "Apache") the threesome attenuated chop-chop and was done for by the mid-'80s, only reversive in 1999 with Spring on It, a rap record album for children.
